The company Danish Crown is the world's most important pork exporter and operates the largest slaughterhouse in Europe. 77,000 pigs a week are processed in the slaughterhouse in Horsens, Denmark.
The requirements concerning refrigeration engineering were especially demanding: not only cooling tunnels, workrooms, storage rooms and temperature equalising chambers have to be cooled, but also air conditioning is required for the offices, kitchen and canteen where approximately 1,400 employees are working every day.
For this purpose, more than 150 Güntner air coolers were installed that cover all the required application ranges. The overall heat exchanger area, through which the air is cooled in the cold rooms is equivalent to the gigantic area of 37,000 m2 - metaphorically speaking, around five football fields! In addition, there are heat exchangers in the 26 air handling units for other air conditioning needs, which cover approximately the same area again. The units are made of stainless steel and are sound-proof to satisfy the high demands Danish Crown has concerning hygiene and sound insulation.
In total, three ammonia refrigeration cycles were designed and installed; the offices and factory work rooms are cooled with glycol plate heat exchangers.
